The course will be of interest to students in biodiversity conservation, ecology, sustainable development, environmental studies, geography, land use management areas, and even political science in relation to conservation and sustainable land use in developing countries. The course is ideal for both students from developed countries, and of course those from developing nations in Latin America, Africa and Asia (where new Reserves are particularly needed).

Objetivos

This is an introductory and practical course, workshop style, to understand the MAB reserves concept and the basis of their planning and management. The course is also an introduction to different types of Reserves existing all around the world

Competencias y resultados de aprendizaje

The student will get a clear idea of ​​the philosophy of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere program and about the objectives and reasons why some areas are declared Biosphere Reserves. The student will use a group work methodology to analyze examples of reserves all around the world as well as examples of the Reserves of the Cantabrian Mountains.



Programa

Thursday 2: Introduction to UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserves.

(Initiate on-line studies of individual student sub-projects)

 Friday 3:   History of the Reserves concept. The Seville Plan for Reserves. Examples of Reserves in Europe, North and South America.

(Students finalize their selections. Reading assignment on the Madrid Action Plan for Reserves)

 Monday 6: Reserves from desert, and island settings. Examples of reserves from Africa, Asia, Australia

(Continue on-line studies in the classrooms)

 Tuesday 7:  Madrid Action Plan for Reserves2008-2015; Lima Plan 2016 

(Finish the in-classroom on-line detailed studies of the individualized selected Reserves)

 Wednesday 8:  Reserves from Grasslands, Tropical forests, temperate forests.

Reserves in coastal zones; marine Reserves

(Student oral presentations on their individual sub-projects)

Criterios de evaluación
Se exigirá la asistencia de al menos el 80% de las sesiones presenciales/online.
Oral presentations on the students' project will be evaluated having in account their clarity, contents, and type of study of the selected topics.
